This week was back to school for me. I’m going to enjoy both classes. The first is an American Science Fiction class. This is right up my alley. I’m not into the hard SF stuff, but I do enjoy a great deal of it along with fantasy. We’re reading a book by Burroughs right now. He’s the guy who created Tarzan. Check out The Princess of Mars There’s also a movie in preproduction around this novel and a few others with the John Carter protagonist. That’ll be interesting considering all the Martians don’t wear any clothing.
The second class I’m taking is a short story writing class, basically like a wrting workshop/group type of class. We have a typical anthology of short stories. The professor began the class with a disturbing short-short by Joyce Carol Oates called “Boy.” about a female teacher taking a student to a hotel. I guess she was going for shock appeal and trying to get us to see great writing that thinks outside of the box.
